After a re-installation of Microsoft Windows, it is quite normal to have to re-install drivers. A driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with hardware or devices. Without drivers, the hardware in your computer or hardware you connect to your computer—for example, a wireless adapter, video card or a printer—won’t work properly.
You can download the required drivers for your machine from the manufacturer’s website. If you cannot connect to the internet on the machine you need to install the drivers on, either via wireless or by using an Ethernet cable from your machine to the router, you’ll need to use another machine to download the driver files and transfer them across to the problem PC using a usb device or a CD for example.
It is good practice to download and install any drivers titled Chipset first followed by any drivers you may be missing.
The usual driver categories (most commonly required) are:
Mouse, Keyboard & Input Devices
To get a good indication of drivers you are missing you can open up the device manager on your machine.
How to open the windows device manager:
1. Click on Start/windows button and then Run if using windows XP, if using another version of windows proceed to the next step
2. Type the following command into the run command box if using windows XP, if using another version of windows type the command into the search box and then hit the Enter key or click on the OK button.
The device manager should open, any problem devices should show warning signs next to the devices your machine is struggling to communicate with, as in the below screen shot (Video driver problem):
When you have established which drivers are missing to can proceed to the manufacturers website to download the required drivers, below is a list of links to the driver download sections of the most common PC manufacturer’s websites:
Generally speaking, you will be required to enter the model of your machine before being directed to the download page. The download page may also include various software applications, these are not essential, only the drivers are required.
